The medieval village of Caunes-Minervois
The medieval village of Caunes-Minervois, one of the most beautiful villages in the region, located 3.8 km from Trausse, and its Romanesque abbey, offer a charming heritage stop. On the way to the city of Minerve (Hérault), one can visit the abbey with a mix of reverence and amazement.
Azille and Pépieux
Discover Azille, a circular fortified village surrounded by walls and towers. The 14th-century Saint-Julien church is a remarkable example of Southern Gothic art known for its Black Madonna. Before leaving, don’t forget to climb the bell tower to admire the view of the plain and the Montagne Noire.
Next, stop in the picturesque village of Pépieux and visit the Dolmen des Fades, the largest in the Midi of France.
Lake Jouarres
You arrive at Lake Jouarres, welcome to relax on the grass or pebble beach or cool off! Enjoy water activities such as boat rentals, pedal boats, kayaking, and inflatable water games in season. Just 5 minutes away, at the port of Homps on the Canal du Midi, come and discover the Maison des Vins du Minervois. You can access the shop where more than 130 wineries and domains will introduce you to their wine, and if you wish, indulge in a tasting.
Puichéric, between the Aude River and the canal
Heading towards Puichéric via the D111, you’ll follow along the canal to see its imposing church, adjacent to the castle. Also, don’t miss its Aiguille lock where original sculptures will surprise you. It’s even said to be the best-decorated lock on the Canal du Midi!
Marseillette and Rustiques
Passing through Marseillette, the birthplace of the singer Olivia Ruiz, for a surprising discovery: the dried-up pond where rice is cultivated! This unique place is now full of apple trees and rice fields.
Then, visit Rustiques, which will surprise you with its medieval garden, archaeological museum, and church…
Malves and Villarzel
Passing through Trèbes where you’ll find the canal… Bouilhonnac and its old castle, then heading towards Malves-en-Minervois, and its menhir, 11 kilometers northeast of Carcassonne.
Villarzel-Cabardès and its Visigothic cemetery, where you’ll be in the heart of the scrubland, lulled by the song of cicadas until you reach Laure-Minervois, where a wine tasting in one of the many vineyards awaits you.
